I just knew I would have to make some kind of apology for my post about Japan, so Mr. Anonymous, this one's for you.
I'm truly sorry that you have friends in Japan and I cannot begin to imagine how much pain that can cause. My point was NEVER to hurt anyone's feelings, but I do want to correct some things here.
"But I dont think putting up a post saying so is necessary. If people dont know about it or don't know how to donate, it is likely that even if I did post and make them aware that they wouldn't do anything anyway."
Everyone should know about it, there is absolutely no excuse for that. Would you excuse someone who didn't know that two planes had crashed into the Twin Towers a week after it happened? I don't think so. And I completely disagree: if you post about it, you spread the word and you make more people aware, so it is of course more likely that those people would donate or help.
"I would much prefer to send off notes of support to my friends in Japan. And I think thats more beneficial to let them know that I care about them, rather than put it on a blog post they won't
read. Luckily - they will be back soon."
It's great that you send them notes of support, but do you think it's bad that we, people who don't have friends or family in Japan, try to help spread the word? especially when blogging is such a huge part of the media today? Sure, they might not read it, but you can be sure that we're making a difference, and trust me, they won't look at us in the future and say "pshh I hate those bloggers". No. They would most likely be appreciative of us. Now, do you think they're going to look at bloggers who didn't even say a word of support about this and say "WOW they really did support us!" I don't think so.
"But to be made to feel guilty by reading posts like this (there have been a few) is horrible. Also making people feel like they should blog about it will lead to an influx of half hearted posts - simply because it is the right thing to do. And yes I have posted other things since that have not been related to Japan. But I am showing my support in other way."
Okay, I think saying that I'm making people feel guilty is completely twisting my words. Again, my point wasn't to make anyone feel guilty, this is my blog after all and I'm all for discussion and debate, but what I don't tolerate is when people twist my words. I just feel like so many 'famous' bloggers have the power to make a difference and yet they choose to post about donuts or how cute their dog is, which is completely fine, I'm not saying that the world should stop because of what's going on in Japan, but if you can help, why don't you? I don't think I'm being the mean one here. And the excuse you're giving about keeping quiet isn't valid for those bloggers who could make the biggest difference. Believe me, I've gotten comments from people who say that it's difficult for them to write about this tragedy because their words would never express what they feel, I get that, I completely get that. But again, that is not an excuse for bloggers who have thousands and thousands of followers. I see so many of my blogging friends post about events and humanitarian organisations, and THAT is what we should all be doing. How do you think that so many institutions are able to make a difference? Well, because people get together, this is a group effort on a universal scale.
That's all. Again, I'm sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings, that was the complete opposite of the point I was trying to make here.
